The Viktualienmarkt is one of Europe’s largest food markets; it is located right in the centre of the city, a short walk from the Marienplatz, and is heaving with people all year round. The Viktualienmarkt does not have the appearance of the usual local market, but that of a sort of large open air shop, with tidy stalls, all strictly painted dark green. Over an extension of 22,000 sqm, 140 sellers offer Bavarian and international products that are a true celebration of quality cuisine. Fresh and preserved meats from all German regions, game, fresh fish, fruit and vegetables, besides cups of steaming soup that can be enjoyed on the spot on the long communal tables. The quality of the merchandise is distinctly high, as are the prices. If, during the summer, the square becomes one of the most beautiful open air beerhouses of the area, during the winter the punters turn to the square’s small kneipens to warm up with schnapps, clear or flavoured spirits that are true remedies against the cold.
Further information: Viktualienmarkt 6, D-80331 Munich. The Market is open from Monday to Saturday, from 7am to 7pm (on Saturdays some stalls close at around 4-5pm).
