Copenhagen, the capital of Denmark, is one of the most beautiful and green-friendly cities you can find today. In Danish, called as “København” which means “merchants harbour”, this city is a vibrant cultural, climate, and design capital of the modern world and continuously recognised as one of the world’s best cities in terms of quality of living. A cross-stitch of lovely medieval architecture in the inner-city, rising ornate spires of churches and palaces, royal castles and gardens and modern eco-friendly designer buildings, have to be experienced rather than just seen. One word which is intricately entwined with Copenhagen is “Design”, a focus which city-planners and successive governments have enabled Copenhagen to win the envious title of the “Design Capital of the world” in 2008. The Danes love design, be it in architecture, clothes, museums or restaurants and a walk down the famous shopping street “Strøget” to the harbour will be enough to give you a glimpse of Danish design in about everything. From their more violent and humble beginnings as the Vikings to the modern and glittery city of today, the city also carries a rich historical and cultural heritage which are very well preserved in the numerous historical sites and museums. In fact, their active monarchy is one of the oldest in the world. Today’s Danes are modest and humble and in Copenhagen the Danes you will meet are easy going, fun-loving people. Excellent public transport, created with a “Five Finger” plan where 5 lines of the public transport reach out into the cities suburbs, with well inter-connected bus routes, means that going around anywhere in Copenhagen is a breeze. Couple this to the green parks and well-marked, intricate bicycle lanes in this bicycle friendly country; you have a healthy and green loving population. History and modernity, rich cultural tastes, modern cosmopolitan choices all offered against a seaside backdrop combine to make Copenhagen one of the most vibrant and charming cities in the Northern Hemisphere.
